SUSTAINABILITY AS A VALUE

Hotel i Dammusi in Borgo Cala Creta is the first hotel in Italy to join the Hotel Sustainability Basics sustainability scheme and to have obtained verification from SGS, a Swiss company, world leader in inspection, verification, analysis and certification services.

Hotel Sustainability Basics is an international sustainability verification program promoted by the World Tourism and Travel Council (WTTC) and overseen by recognized certification bodies. Obtaining the Hotel Sustainability Basics verification involves adhering to a modular sustainability program composed of 12 areas, aimed at reducing carbon emissions, promoting nature conservation and ensuring benefits for local communities resulting from hotel operations.

The milestone represents a major advancement in the travel and tourism industry towards a more resilient and sustainable future.

GOOD PRACTICES:

● Since 2019, the structure has been equipped with a 70 Kwh photovoltaic system which has allowed us to avoid an average of 97,632 tCO2eq per year;
● In each dammuso, water flow reducers are applied to the taps and reduced flow buttons to all toilets;
● The structure is equipped with a drip irrigation system, in order to guarantee savings in water consumption;
●All the courtesy kits of the structure have a low environmental impact, in fact we only use Body/Face detergents in solid format with biodegradable wrapping;
● Regarding catering, it is very important for us to use KM 0 products as much as possible and to use only seasonal fruit and vegetables;
● We raise awareness in all environments about separate waste collection, placing containers at the reception to dispose of separated waste.

By joining the SME Climate Hub, we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment through concrete actions, halving our emissions by 2030. By signing the SME Climate Pledge, we have joined the Race to Zero campaign of the United Nations High-Level Climate Champions.

ANTI-WASTE RESTAURANT

The restaurant of Hotel I Dammusi di Borgo Cala Creta is registered with the "Too Good To Go" app, with the mission of inspiring and empowering everyone to fight food waste together. Too Good is in fact the largest marketplace in the world for food surpluses and for this reason it allows us to save inside surprise bags, the excellent dishes to be consumed prepared by our restaurant. The surprise bags can be booked by users directly on the app and collected at our facility.

THE DIGITAL AND SUSTAINABLE TRANSITION THROUGH PARTICIPATION IN EUROPEAN PROJECTS

Hotel i Dammusi di Borgo Cala Creta, has managed to carry out part of its sustainable activities thanks to funding, granted under the COSME program, a program for the competitiveness of Enterprises and SMEs, established by the European Union. The projects that have seen us as active protagonists of sustainable and responsible tourism, have been the following:

I-STARS
The I-STARS (Island Sustainable Tourism Action through Resilient SMEs) project, launched in February 2023 and co-financed by the European Union, supported island tourism businesses in the transition process envisaged by the 2030 Agenda.
Through the I-STARS project, we have managed to implement a system capable of annually monitoring energy, gas and water consumed, waste produced and tons of CO2 generated by our activities. This has allowed us to achieve the Hotel Sustainability Basics sustainability scheme.

COASTOUR
COASTOUR is a project co-financed by the European Commission for the sustainable development of the rural coastal tourism sector. Through the COASTOUR project, we have defined the environmental and social policies and the climate transition plan of the hotel. These activities have allowed us to become members of the SME Climate Hub and achieve our first sustainability Scoring.
